I train new startups all the time. Usually, it is a person who has worked for a construction company and now wants to start their own company. They have field and even office knowledge but one area that is lacking is a background in Accounting. If I had to recommend anything to a new startup it is this: hire someone with deep accounting experience early on or if that is not possible at the time make sure they have basic accounting knowledge. I found this free accounting course a while back that is a great starter. The usual solution for accounting software is Quickbooks which is a pretty good option up to a point but it allows a person to slide by and get around knowing the basics of accounting. Inevitably the new startup will need short-term loans and showing lending institutions that you are on top of the accounting is a huge plus in getting approval for the loans.
