HeavyBid is a good tool for calculating a project’s cost to complete and it gives you a snapshot of each succeeding month’s remaining work. Start with the conformed estimate and at the end of each month for each bid item (or you can do it at the activity level) just update the quantities to reflect what remains to complete. In the bid item notes you can list each month’s completed quantities for reference as well as notes on why productions/crews etc are being revised from the conformed estimate.  These estimates can be dynamic and reflect change orders and change in means and methods. For the latter create a new bid item for the revised method and non-add the original (as bid) means and method. At the end of each month you create a new estimate based on the previous month’s cost to complete and revise quantities. As a check subtract the current month’s cost in Summary from the previous estimate cost and that will give you what was completed for that particular month.  Export each estimate bid item costs to Excel and there you can show what was completed for each biditem for that month. So each estimate reflects what remains to the completion of the project. This is much more accurate than using the accounting method of % complete as it is only based on the budget and keeps you out of the accounting system as a bonus.
